Launched in 2003 as an incentive award scheme under the Total Sanitation Campaign, Nirmal Gram Puraskar rewarded gram panchayats, blocks, and districts that achieved Open Defecation Free (ODF) status with complete sanitation coverage. The cash award ranged from ₹50,000 to ₹50 lakh depending on population size. NGP was an innovative demand-side incentive that motivated community-led sanitation action. It was subsumed into the Swachh Bharat Mission's ODF verification framework in 2014.
